Our second single, Night Train, is now out on all streaming platforms!

This song is the second (but not last) part of the EP The War on Cars (release in June).
This EP is about the healing process after a life-threatening car accident of our singer. All songs make up a part of this process (anger, confusion, gratefulness), and Night Train represents the biggest part, which is love.

More specifically on this track: It started out quite cute, but when the band got inspired seeing the band Metz and their sonic violence live (read: a bunch of distortion and a wall of sound), they implemented a similar intro to the song which made this track come to life. 

Furthermore, the song is covered in sweet lyrics and even some jingly-chime sounds (for the careful listener), but in the end always keeps its eerie and darker undertones. 

Night Train represents Love, the final emotion of the healing process. It's the full circle, the resolution, the end and the beginning.  

The War on Cars, Barren Sea's first Extended Play is in the making. Around two years ago, our lead singer was victim of a nearly fatal traffic accident. The EP follows the healing process of Marie. This healing process is filtered through her everyday-life experience, her childhood memories, her deepest dreams and the longing for a better place. Each of the four songs represent one of the four emotions associated to the healing process: anger, confusion, empathy and love.

Private Beaches, the first single of the album, represents the first emotion of the process: anger. It is a stream of consciousness weaving together worldly worries and transcendental elements in a dark and rhythmic tale.

What happens when 4 full-time workers start a band?

Being in a band together is a fantastic experience but can be challenging, especially on top of a full-time office job. Trying to fix everything by yourself is hard: booking gigs, trying to find fair-trade and sustainable ways to make merch t-shirts, tax return, rehearsal, fixing presskit, trying to work out that section of that song “that doesn’t quite work yet”. It can also be frustrating when you find out that all sorts of distribution services, music services and platforms seem to make it harder for you rather than lending a helping hand.

At the end of the day we are very happy to be making music together, and we can’t deny many times we’ve been rushing from our office to get to rehearsal and let it out. I guess our songs have also gotten a bit less cutsie and a bit more angry. Always blame the grind!

Bottom line is: come see us next year and you won’t regret it. We’ve been working really hard and next year will be great!
